The pilot opened the throttles to go around again, but the engines failed to respond, and the aircraft sank onto the runway. The undercarriage was not fully locked down and collapsed on touchdown. Pilot F/O JD Mundy and his crew were unhurt. |

The aircraft was destroyed when it crashed 1 mile west-south-west of the airfield when it struck a tree on approach and crashed into the ground after the pilot dropped the aircraft's nose to pick up speed after thinking the aircraft was stalling while trying to land on return at 2124hrs. The pitot tube feeding the airspeed indicator had been damaged when the aircraft struck the tree, hence the false reading. The pilot was killed on impact, and Sgt Wegrzyh died from his injuries in Station Sick Quarters, Swinderby. P/O A.Krynski (Polish) killed, F/O Golko (Polish) injured, P/O Szymanski (Polish) injured, Sgt Graczyk (Polish) injured, Sgt Wegrzyn (Polish) injured, Sgt Szuczynski (Polish) injured. |
