Halfway doen the runway the port fuel warning lights came on. The flight engineer changed fuel tanks but the lights stayed on, and the aircraft began to swing as the port engines lost power. The aircraft came to rest on its belly at the end of the runway. The crew apart from Sgt Dawes were unhurt. After becoming airborne, the crew encountered very severe icing and within a few minutes both starboard engines ceased to function. Attempts to feather the two engines were unsuccessful and their plight worsened as the airspeed indicator became affected by the icing. Bombs were jettisoned but after forty- five minutes of flying, the crew abandoned the aircraft. The wreckage of the aircraft was found on the beach between Mablethorpe and Theddlethorpe St.Helen. Shortly after the fire started, the emergency dinghy released itself from the wing and added to the aircraft's problems. The aircraft would not maintain height on a single engine, so the pilot attempted a forced-landing wheels-up in a field. On approach to his chosen field, he had to make a sharp turn to avoid a house, and the aircraft struck a telegraph pole, crashing in the roadway 1 1/4 miles south-south-west of Wootton village. Pilot F/Lt JF Johnstone was seriously injured in the crash, second pilot W/O D Shaw was unhurt, one other crewmember was also uninjured. F/O PR Armstrong, the wireless operator baled out at 700 feet and was killed when his parachute failed to fully open before he hit the ground.

The starboard inner engine had failed before the crash and was feathered. Both wings were damaged beyond repair when the aircraft struck buildings, and the starboard engine was also damaged. No injuries to pilot 1st Lt Wallace R Johnson and his crew.

Earlier in the day RF137 had been involved in an aborted raid on the Dortmund- Ems canal and had dropped some bombs to bring the aircraft landing weight down to a safe level. A test flight after the accident revealed that the remaining bombs on the aircraft had probably armed themselves in flight whilst the bomb doors were open to jettison other bombs, as the safety clips were found to be faulty as they allowed the arming vanes to turn. LAC B.Burnell killed, LAC C.H.Higgins killed, LAC H.G.Wilson killed. LAC Higgins was aged 41. Fourteen other airmen were injured in this accident.

The aircraft hit the ground at a shallow angle, disintegrated and the wreckage was spread over a wide area. Fw H Conze killed, Uffz R Schere killed, Obergefr W Nollau killed, Uffz A Altenkirch killed. They were buried a few days later in Scampton (St.John The Baptist) Churchyard.

The aircraft crashed in a field between Hall Farm and Catton's Holt, Blankney. F/O S.F. Parlato DFC (New Zealander) was killed in the crash. A memorial to both aircraft was erected near the site of the Lancaster crash and a plaque commemorating the crews was presented to the RAF Waddington Heritage Centre.

The aircraft had been seen flying with bomb doors open and rocking from side to side as if trying to shake free hung-up bombs or jettison its bombload. The aircraft then made a controlled ditching tail-first into the sea, which went perfectly until the aircraft's nose hit the water, at which point the bombload exploded. The bodies of F/L Shephard and Sgt Mitchell were recovered, the latter being found some 300 yards off the town's pier. The others are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. At 11,700 feet #859, piloted by Lt Dobbins, collided with #687, running into the tail section killing the observation officer, LT Olson, instantly. Three crewmen managed to bail out from #687; however, John Hill jumped too low and his chute failed to open completely. Shortly after starting a shallow left turn, aircraft 859 collided with aircraft 687. The props chewed into the tail section of 687 from above and cut off the tail empennage. After colliding, both aircraft peeled up and out of formation, 859 returned to base on three engines, 687 went out of control, spun down through cloud and crashed into the ground.1st Lt Clyde E. The aircraft was held straight until the port undercarriage totally collapsed, at which point the aircraft spun 180 degrees. Pilot S/Ldr S Slater and crew were unhurt. This was the last Lancaster accident of the war in Lincolnshire.
